Company background

The Fokker Elmo Engineering department is comprised of different disciplines in the Electrical Wiring Interconnection System (EWIS) core business. This internship is related to the EWIS Components & Environmental testing (ECE) discipline of the Fokker Elmo Engineering department.

EWIS Components & Environmental testing (ECE): this discipline is mainly responsible for the (standard) parts, materials and constructions definition, selection and qualification (testing). This is the most critical for EWIS configurations in the most demanding environments, such as engines and landing gears.

The term EWIS covers all wiring harnesses (bundles) in a typical aircraft, which perform the function of power- and data transportation in between electrical equipment (from the generation of electrical power up to the individual electrical equipment of the different aircraft systems

What is the challenge?

Fokker Elmo is looking for a costs calculation tool, which supports the following goals:

• Catalog of all ECE engineering activities, and their flow, related to the design and manufacturing of a new wiring harness with cost and lead time estimations
• Dynamic tool that can provide cost estimations for different products (different sizes, environmental conditions, etc.)

Task DescriptionFokker Elmo is the primary integrator of EWIS within a large number of commercial and defense projects.

To ensure that Fokker Elmo provides accurate engineering proposals to future customers, it has identified the need to revisit the way it estimates the time and costs associated with the design and manufacture of wiring harnesses.

For this purpose, Fokker Elmo wants to establish a cost and lead time calculation tool, which provides an overview of all engineering activities (and their flow), how much lead time a task typically takes, and the associated costs.

An extensive overview of all tasks within the ECE department, and the general flow of these tasks will be made. A number of interviews should be held with engineering specialists to use their experiences for the estimation of lead times and costs.

Planning

The internship will last for 5 months, covering the following activities:

• Literature study into aircraft electrical wiring and ECE department activities.
• Definition of ECE activity flowchart, from project conception to end of product life.
• Interviews with industry experts to assess time / cost estimates.
• Establishment of a dynamic time / cost estimation tool.
• Reporting.

Who are we looking for?

• Education Level: University of Applied Sciences (Bachelors)
• Type of Internship: 3rd year internship assignment (5 months)
• Required Language: English / Dutch; verbal & written
